Uwe Schiefer – Weisser Schiefer M 2015, Burgenland, Austria

This 2015 “M” is one of the most challenging and expressive interpretations of Welschriesling, vinified with skin contact. In this case, it is blended with Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grüner Veltliner, and a small amount of Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris). The grapes are hand-destemmed and then fermented on the skins for 3 months. Afterwards, the wine matures without pressing in a large old wooden cask, where it remains for 4 years without any intervention: no racking, no sulfur, no treatments of any kind. After those 4 years, it is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The wine displays a beautiful orange-amber color with golden reflections. On the nose, an enticing mix of kumquats, orange, honey, herbs, spices, and dried fruits — an intense and complex bouquet. This richness carries through to a layered and concentrated tasting experience. On the palate, notes of Szechuan pepper, biscuit, honey, and a vibrant freshness with salty minerality and acidity. The overall impression is highly complex and deep, with an endlessly long finish that shows a light smoky touch and oxidative elements.
